Species
Levisticum officinale W.D.J.Koch
Lovage is a herb with a strong flavor, good for many dishes. Easy to grow, forms a large root which can eventually be divided.
It can also be used as a leafy vegetable. Strong taste reminiscent of Maggi broth, which is why it is often called “Maggikraut” in German. Certainly the herb was previously included in the recipe. Like almost all herbs, according to the Romans, it is good for love life (as they probably said about almost all plants, which perhaps says something about focus…), and therefore it is also called “lovage” in English. If in the spring it is covered with black cloth over some hoops, or a black bucket, it grows up as pale shoots that are mild in taste.
