This one has been selected in 2023 because it was the one with the largest clove and largest bulb, in fact close to the rocambole types. The first is an obvious quality in the kitchen because it means less work with cleaning, the second an advantage in terms of growing from top onions, because second-year onions can become significantly stronger when the starting point is already large. This can mean a year&#8217;s worth of savings within this cultivation method.<\/p>\n<p>More pictures and info <a href=\"\/en\/2023\/11\/11\/new-unique-garlic-varieties-in-maridalen\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Species<\/h3>\n<p><em>Allium sativum<\/em> L.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/species\/2856681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>GBIF<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garlic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Garlic evolved in central Asia, and is found in two main groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>hardneck<\/strong> which forms top sets<\/li>\n<li><strong>softneck<\/strong> which does not form a top sets, but often one or more &#8220;intermediate sets&#8221; in the middle of the stem if the plant is allowed to stand for a long time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wikipedia writes (as of Nov-23) that hardneck is an accepted botanical variety, but according to GBIF it is now included under Allium sativum L., and the name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/species\/6314059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Allium sativum<\/em> var. <em>ophioscorodon<\/em> (Link) D\u00f6ll<\/a> has synonym status. That softneck is considered an accepted variety is, however, correct: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/species\/6435054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Allium sativum\u00a0<\/em>var.<em>\u00a0sativum<\/em> L.<\/a> The article further mentions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/species\/2856690\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Allium longicuspis<\/em> Regel<\/a> as the wild form, but it is now also included under Allium sativum L.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New variety selected from the plants we have from Ivan Buddenhagen&#8217;s breeding project.
