{"id":12025,"date":"2022-09-26T19:55:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-26T17:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bi-o.no\/?post_type=product&#038;p=12025"},"modified":"2024-05-17T15:18:43","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T13:18:43","slug":"garlic-buddenhagen-experiment","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/bi-o.no\/en\/product\/garlic-buddenhagen-experiment\/","title":{"rendered":"Garlic [Buddenhagen experiment]"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Accession<\/h3>\n<p>In 2017, we were lucky enough to buy seeds from the American plant breeder Ivan Buddenhagen, who at the end of his life worked to get the garlic to start setting seeds again.<\/p>\n<h3>Cultivar<\/h3>\n<p>We have some plants that may be promising.<\/p>\n<p>There are only a few top bulbs, so we sell a few lots of the best varieties to those who want to try.<\/p>\n<p>More pictures and info <a href=\"\/en\/2023\/11\/11\/new-unique-garlic-varieties-in-maridalen\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Species<\/h3>\n<p><em>Allium sativum<\/em> L.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/species\/2856681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>GBIF<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garlic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Garlic evolved in central Asia, and is found in two main groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>hardneck<\/strong> which forms top sets<\/li>\n<li><strong>softneck<\/strong> which does not form a top sets, but often one or more &#8220;intermediate sets&#8221; in the middle of the stem if the plant is allowed to stand for a long time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wikipedia writes (as of Nov-23) that hardneck is an accepted botanical variety, but according to GBIF it is now included under Allium sativum L., and the name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/species\/6314059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Allium sativum<\/em> var. <em>ophioscorodon<\/em> (Link) D\u00f6ll<\/a> has synonym status.
