Description

Cultivar

‘Hallum Champagne’

Around 2010, artist and plant enthusiast Stephan Østensen sowed seeds of a cultivar called ‘Champagne’, and we have grown some of the resulting lines. The one we have left is strikingly red in the leaves in the spring, and also has almost completely red stems when fully grown. The taste is very mild and sweet. We think this variety is so exciting that we have chosen to give it a name and are pleased to offer it from the 2024 season onwards.

There is a collection of rhubarb varieties that have been grown in Norway in NIBIO’s collection at Dømmesmoen in Grimstad, which is mentioned in this article. We are aware that these are infected with a type of virus, and that no way of obtaining virus-free material has yet been found. If seed propagation can break the virus transmission, the development of new varieties may be a way to go instead. We need to do more research before we possibly start work on this.
